If you want to really save money on your heating and cooling costs, install a programmable thermostat. You'll be more comfortable too. One benefit that I didn't anticipate but really enjoy is that I can set the thermostat to start to let the house cool down 30 minutes before bedtime and to warm it up 30 minutes before the time I want to get up. Those settings make getting to bed and getting up on time much more natural and easy.
1) Honeywell 8600/8601/8602
Right now I have a Honeywell Chronotherm III, which is nice, but it's a 5-1-1 programmable. That means that Friday night can only be set with the other "weeknights." With the T8600, Friday night can be set like Saturday night while Sunday through Thursday nights can be alike - or not. No more battery, automatic switching from heat to cool, programmable heat cycles and fan control, one-touch DST switching, outside temperature sensor... The T8601 adds heat pumps and the T8602 adds multi-stage.
2) Hunter 7 Day Energy Star Programmable Thermostatâ„¢ Model #: 44360
You should be able to buy this 7-day programmable thermostat for less than $60 US. It can save you up to 33% on your heating and cooling costs. In the right month, I could recover the cost of this thermostat in three weeks. The Hunter 44360 is compatible with most furnaces & cooling systems, including 24 volt, millivolt & Single Stage Heat Pumps. Features? It has temperature, vacation and "Home Today" overrides, a Daylight Savings Time key, a filter monitor and an energy monitor.
3) Aube TH141HC-28
OK, so it takes batteries. So does the one I have now. But this one is 7-day programmable, switches automatically from heating to cooling, has a vacation mode, is armchair programmable, and more. Plus, I can add a telephone controller, so I can reset it while I'm away from home.
4) Honeywell PC8900 Perfect Climate Comfort Center
Check this out: "The Perfect Climate Comfort Centerâ„¢ is the first home control to integrate temperature, humidity, ventilation, filtration, circulation and zoning. Honeywell PC8900 Comfort Center meets the American Lung Association Health House guidelines." And you can add your choice of five W8900 remote control modules.
